Gulf oil spill: BP vice president explains concerns behind delay of crucial well test

Senior Vice President Kent Wells on Wednesday morning detailed some of concerns voiced by experts that prompted the federal government to demand that the oil company delay a crucial well test that could determine whether a new cap can be used to shut off all of the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico.

The test, which had been set to begin Tuesday, seeks to measure the interior pressure of the well in an attempt to gauge whether there are any leaks along the pipe running 13,000 feet into the earth.

If there are no leaks, BP could close off the well with a new tight-fitting cap that was successfully affixed Monday.

But if leaks are suspected, BP will let the oil continue to flow out of the well, at first collecting some of it -- and by late July, all of it -- using a system of riser pipes and containment ships.

The testing delay was announced with little explanation late Tuesday night by Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the federal oil-spill response commander.

Wells, in a morning press conference, said the "24-hour timeout" was ordered due in part to questions about whether the test would be able to determine a key issue: Whether the oil, if leaking, was coming from a shallow or a deep part of the well.

"What we want to do is avoid that oil is being put out in the shallow environment," Wells said. "There's always the potential, remote as it might be, that it could breach up to the surface."

The threat of a crater forming on the sea bed around the well head -- with oil flowing from multiple points -- would be a potentially catastrophic scenario that would make containing the oil extremely difficult.

But according to Darryl Bourgoyne, director of the petroleum research lab at Louisiana State University, leaks deep in the well may not be much of a problem--so long as it was so deep that "the fluid would stay in the subsurface, and cratering wouldn't be a risk."

Latino fear over Utah immigration blacklist

The debate over immigration, and in particular illegal immigration, has at times turned ugly and crass. The latest example has led to increased anxiety and fear among Utah’s Latino community.

A group that called “Concerned Citizens of the United States” sent to several Utah media outlets and police officials a list of over 1300 people suspected of being undocumented immigrants. The anonymous mailing included personal information such as names and addresses as well as Social Security numbers and employers in a few cases. Most of the surnames on the compiled blacklist were reportedly of Latino origin.

A letter accompanying the list, which was mailed out in April, claimed that the group "observes these individuals in our neighborhoods, driving on our streets, working in our stores, attending our schools and entering our public welfare buildings." Furthermore, the group said that they would provide “new lists on a continual basis” with the possibility that those named will be deported.

The accuracy of the list is unknown yet that hasn’t stopped Latinos in Utah from feeling terrorized. "Why did they put me on that list? Now it's been 15 years since I got my residency. … I'm angry," said one woman to the local press while the director of Utah’s Proyecto Latino said that some are worried of harassment by "crazy people".

In response to the mailing Gov. Gary Herbert wrote in a tweet that he has ordered an investigation into the origins of the mailing including the possible illegal infiltration of private government databases.

Due Date Trailer: Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis as Steve Martin and John Candy

As Todd Phillips’s follow-up to The Hangover, the expectations for Due Date were probably pitched a bit too high to begin with — and with Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr. on board (plus a high concept conceit), it’s no wonder. Yet that hype factor aside, shouldn’t this first trailer be a little funnier?

Downey Jr. stars as a man who must get across the country to witness the birth of his first child, a task that would be much easier were it not for Galifianakis in a part that feels like the continuation of his breakout role in The Hangover — except without any major laughs. Predictably, problems arise and this mismatched twosome must find a way to put aside their differences before a mad dash to the hospital in the third act. Game, set, match.

So it’s basically Planes, Trains and Automobiles ‘10, and that’s OK — it’s not like The Hangover was some mind-bending exercise in originality either. Still, that film had one of the funniest trailers ever, while Due Date’s kinda just sits there. You’ll likely smirk at some of the bickering between Downey Jr. and Galifianakis, but it’s hard to imagine anyone who saw The Hangover multiple times telling their friends how pumped they are to see this. Hope for better things when Warner Bros. reworks this trailer in a couple of months — Due Date doesn’t hit theaters until November, so they have some time.

McConnell: Bush Tax Cuts Paid for Themselves

A few days ago, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) termed unemployment benefits — a federal insurance system paid for by employers — a “necessary evil” and said that tax cuts should not need to be offset, but benefits extensions should.

Today, speaking with Talking Points Memo’s Brian Beutler, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) doubled down. “That’s been the majority Republican view for some time,” he said. “That there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.”

This is factually incorrect, and Democrats should be all over this today. Tax cuts do not pay for themselves. Every dollar of tax cuts by making the Bush cuts permanent stimulates an additional 30 cents or so of economic activity. Unemployment insurance does not pay for itself, but it comes much closer. Every dollar of unemployment benefits stimulates around $1.60 of economic activity. Moreover, no economist on earth would say that tax cuts do not need to be offset, but spending increases do; in terms of the budgetary bottom line, there is no difference.

It also shows panty lines and ripples and gathers over any bumps and bulges. Instead, choose a structured dress that's not in a reflective fabric."

Rule 2: Place Your Sequins Strategically

"Well-placed sequins are fabulous, but all over sequins are played out. If not done right, they look cheap. Choose a dress that has embellishment just at the waist or at the neckline and keep it simple. When sparkle is well placed it can call attention to the parts of your body you like."

Rule 3: Skip The Asymmetrical Trend If You Have A Bigger Bust And Fuller Arms

"I think cut-outs can be very flattering, but the rest has to be very minimal -- minimal makeup, simple hair and your shoes should be very clean because showing the skin does the talking for you. You cannot have any tummy rolls or back rolls sticking out of that dress, so the athletic, boxy body types (think Hilary Swank) look good in this style. There's a way to be sophisticated and sexy when you're doing cut-outs, but if you go over the top, it's going to err on the slutty side. Even if you have an amazing body, less is usually more."

"Really think about your body when choosing ruffles. If you are curvy or busty, then ruffles are probably a no-go because they're going to add unwanted volume, although you could go for ruffling on the bottom half of your body. For a woman that's small busted, boxy or athletic, ruffles work best on the upper half of the body. It adds volume to a small bust, they break up a boxy frame and they add a feminine touch to a boyish figure."
